Director Request for Proposals
Spring Play 2018

The City of Fairfax Theatre Company’s mission is to enrich, educate and connect our community through theatre programming for all ages.

CFTC is currently soliciting proposals from potential directors for our 2018 Spring Play presented as one of the offerings during Fairfax City’s Spotlight on the Arts Festival in late April/early May (dates TBD). CFTC’s previous productions for this event included Doubt, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? and The Importance of Being Earnest. Cast size would be small – 4-8 actors. Adult actors are anticipated.

Auditions will be held in January. Rehearsals can be held Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturdays from the week after auditions through tech week.  Performances are anticipated to be held at the Fairfax City Old Town Hall on in late April, early May - with Friday and Saturday evening performances and Saturday matinees.

CFTC board members volunteer for various support roles and CFTC’s artistic director, Kirsten Boyd, will take lead on producing.  CFTC provides a small stipend for artistic staff, usually to the director and stage manager.  CFTC will contract for the rights to perform the show. Total production budget for costume, sets and props is usually around $2500, with additional money set aside for lighting and pipe and drape rental.  Ticket prices are $18-$25 depending on online vs door sales.

To present a proposal to direct the 2018 Spring Drama, please submit the following information to fairfaxcitytheatre@gmail.com no later than September 19, 2017:

1.      Contact information: Name, address, email, phone
2.      Your qualifications and experience in theatre
3.      The show you are proposing and why you want to do this production
4.      Who holds the rights for this show (you may want to make a preliminary inquiry to ensure that the production is available for licensing)
5.      Cast size, casting requirements
6.      Your concept and vision for the show.  One of the opportunities required of this production is to convert the main floor of the Old Town Hall into an intimate theatre space with riser seating for 40 – 50
7.      Your initial ideas on production elements and how you would make them work within the expected budget. Please also address any special technical needs, special effects or any other production challenges that should be known in advance.
8.      Any special ideas for marketing and promotion that you would suggest
9.      Other creative team members that would join you for the production: stage manager, tech director, lighting/costume/props designers
10.  Anything else you think that the board should know

If your proposal is selected, a CFTC board member will contact you for an interview with the selection team.
The board will review all proposals and notify all participants of its decision by November 1, 2017.
Stipends are available for directors and some members of the production team.
