Request for Director Proposals 2025

CFTC's mission is to generate live performing arts experiences by and for our community that reflect the rich diversity and uniqueness of Northern Virginia. Our season should fit into this mission to give a voice to members of our community to tell authentic stories. Something that makes CFTC unique is participation by multiple generations in many of our productions. We are looking for artists with a point of view and a story to tell. We are also looking for artists who share our values and are committed to casting and hiring creative team members with consciousness toward inclusivity of people of all races, genders, orientations, ages, abilities, body types, and backgrounds. In the spirit of community theatre, we work with those who are enthusiastic about being part of our company, regardless of experience level.

Does this sound like you? Are you interested in directing or producing? We want to hear from you!

CFTC is currently soliciting proposals from director/producer candidates for our 2024 Season:

Late Winter/Early Spring Drama (2025)
Most likely performed in Feb/Mar at Katherine Johnson MS. CFTC’s previous productions for this event included POTUS, Clybourne Park, True West, Doubt, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Importance of Being Earnest. Cast size would be small – 4-8 actors. This show should utilize adult actors only and can contain more mature themes/language, if desired. Auditions will be held in October or November. Rehearsals can be held Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturdays from the week after auditions through tech week. You may submit a small-cast musical for this slot; please list music director in proposal. This production will be submitted to the WATCH Awards for adjudication.

Summer/Fall Outdoor Play (2025)
Most likely performed in September at Veterans Amphitheater. Most recently we presented Much Ado About Nothing. This started in 2020 with A Midsummer Night’s Dream and continued with our Brief Shakespeare Festival in 2021 and Macbeth in 2022. This slot is open to full productions (please list your producer), staged readings, scenes, sonnets-- however you envision presenting Shakespeare/classical theatre/other plays outdoors in the City of Fairfax. This production will have mostly adults or older teens in the cast, and should be a script suitable to an audience of all ages. This production may be submitted to the WATCH Awards for adjudication, pending eligibility.

Holiday Production (2025)
Most likely performed in early December at Katherine Johnson MS, presented as entertainment for the whole family. The cast typically consists of upper elementary-middle school students, with some roles for adults and teens. Auditions are held in August/September. The play is rehearsed in the evenings and on Saturdays, with performances in late November/early December. At this time, we are only accepting submissions for holiday-themed productions. If you would like to propose a musical, please list your music director in the proposal. This production may be submitted to the WATCH Awards for adjudication, pending eligibility.

Directors and Producers will be contracted as Independent Contractors to perform work under the supervision of the CFTC Artistic Director and Board. CFTC Board Members volunteer for various support roles, and CFTC’s Artistic Director will work with you/your producer to fill the creative team and book rehearsal and performance space. CFTC provides a small stipend for artistic staff. CFTC will contract for the rights to perform the show, order scripts, provide a production budget developed with the director/producer and approved by the Board, handle marketing and ticket sales, and purchase and/or reimburse pre-approved production expenses.
